Hardcore Gamer went hands-on with the PS4 and PC versions of the upcoming game and if what we played is anything to go by, Bungie may have a real winner. While Destiny 2 may not change the minds of those opposed to loot shooter or MMO-lite mechanics, it will make those who were disappointed by the original game very happy. Destiny 2 is bigger, better structured and packs a more powerful punch.
What does relationship mean for lore though? Of course, the actual relationship aspect of Destiny is there, but itās always been there. Destiny 2 is not only creating worlds, though, itās actually telling stories within those worlds. The people that inhabit these spaces are important and Bungie seems to be doing everything to make the player care about them. From the looks of interaction with those around you while traversing the many environments Destiny 2 has to offer, the aspect of relationship is everywhere. Zavala giving command to the player and other NPCs around him. It creates a sense of urgency immediately invoking a compassion that only comes from feeling connected to others. Then there is the EDZ a new area for players to call home. The people they were protecting have started forming communities here. Actively participating in these places will create a more grounded sense of community. Itās the reason WoW cities felt so lived in; the people that inhabit these spaces are going about their daily lives. It isnāt about, go out, kill aliens, return. It feels like being the Pavlovian dog waiting for the treat. None of that seems to be in Destiny 2.
Oh, patrols return in Destiny 2. The blinking green beacons are littered throughout the EDZ, and the missions they dole out havenāt changed from the first game. Kill a certain amount of enemies to collect materials, kill a captain, scan an area, etc. Patrols are still meaningless busy work, but you do get some rewards for completing them.
Whether they intended it or not, when Bungie stated during the livestream that community was what bound Destiny together, they made relationship clear. Destiny is about playing with friends new and old. It could be a one off, with the new Guided Games or something more concrete with friends who have banded together again to face the encroaching darkness. If community is so important to Destiny, it was only understandable that this path would be traversed eventually. Relationship, is something most of us take part in everyday whether we like it or not. Even the Guardians in the Tower couldnāt escape the inevitable crouchers that would surround you or the dance parties. Oh, the dance parties. People canāt help but be drawn to each other, even if it means joining others only in digital spaces.
Destiny released in September of 2013 and with it came an avid fan base, not necessarily for the game itself, but for developer Bungie as a whole. Unfortunately, Destiny wasnāt the most well-received game and its history is marked by scars of mistakes past. Nonetheless it pushed ever onward and a healthy fan following remained to keep it alive-and-well. Thereās even a Guardiancon now and the game is still in its child years if breaking it down. It can think, play and be socially engaging; it just needs to grow a bit more. Thankfully, Destiny 2 Tips is giving the ultimate gift in its last few months before Destiny 2 comes out.
Destiny 2 is laying the groundwork for outstanding storytelling and unforgettable moments. It’s setting a solid foundation for the game it always wanted to be, while delivering the things Destiny never could. Itās an exciting time to be a Guardian even if it means the Last City falling only to pick ourselves up one more time. At least this time, there are those worth fighting for.
Having faction leaders like Devrim is a step forward for Destinyās open areas. Heās a strong personality, and it is good to listen to other characters that arenāt Nolan Northās-voiced Ghost. The inclusion of NPCs, however, still donāt provide players with everything they need, as youāll still need to travel back to social spaces to decrypt engrams and access your vault. A more seamless experience that incorporated social spaces into the open area would have been much preferred.
We have all-new worlds to explore. Immediately after the opening act, your character is exiled into the European Dead Zone. Itās an Earth destination and the biggest map weāve ever created by far. You will explore this destination and its lush forests. Thatās really where youāll start your new journey. Youāll journey to Titan, an oceanic moon. The entire moon is one big sea, but there are these human installations that were erected during the Golden Age. Youāll go to Io, which is one of Jupiterās moons and is the last place the Traveler touched before the Collapse. Itās a place of magic and mysticism. Finally, youāll go to Nessus, which is an unstable planetoid that has been completely transformed into a machine world by the Vex.
