Finally, we have power weapons. Replenished with purple ammo, these are the weapons that deal heavy damage and whose ammo is the scarcest. Rocket launchers, swords and the new grenade launcher weapons fit in here. Bungie controversially moved sniper rifles, fusion rifles and shotguns to this category, angering many fans. How this change will affect the meta of the game remains to be seen.
[JH]: We talk about everything, top-to-bottom, with all our creative partners. The first Destiny had a non-silent protagonist. In Destiny 2, we put an emphasis on the playerās story and we feel that, when it comes to the balance of how much should you talk vs an NPC, it should be more NPC. This isnāt Master Chief or Nathan Drake, this is supposed to be you. We donāt want to be presumptuous about the words we put in your mouth as youāre exploring. Ghost is there to help guide you through the story.Speaking of space-magic, more lore has been filled in with the arrival of new ghost. Yes, not everyone wants to crawl to the internet to discovery the intricate workings of just what makes Destiny tick, but for lore-nerds like me, this is a dream come true. I will gladly take more lore, because for those who donāt know, Destiny has some crazy cool sci-fi/fantasy lore. When is space-magic a bad thing? Itās not. Any tad bit more of lore to leak out will be greedily consumed until the next one arrives. It might seem like a small thing, but all those NPCs arenāt just spotting nonsense, they are referencing things. Itās the same reason every item has a cryptic description. In fact, this might be the best time to get to know Destiny. Might as well see how it all came to be while waiting for Destiny 2, right? So, go read that lore. Itās crazy and out-there in the best of ways. Just know it’s heavy on the space-magic — a wizard did come from the moon, after all. If that doesnāt sum it up, I donāt know what does.
The third night rolled around and with four of us ready to go we waited hoping the other two would join. They did not. Understandably so, Leviathan was proving to be slow going. Instead the four of us ended up exploring the Underbelly a fantastic piece of the raid that made it feel like not a total wash. The four of us could fight the enemies with ease and enjoy getting lost in a labyrinth of ship innards. As we explored we talked about what was difficult about the raid, the best ways to approach where we were and why Leviathan wasnāt proving fruitful. Thatās the beauty of Destiny: itās a fun game so long as friends are at your side, even if it’s a bit soul crushing.
Bungie has completely overhauled the way guns are classified in Destiny 2 News 2. In the original game, you had a primary, a secondary and a heavy weapon. Thatās gone, replaced by the new Kinetic, Energy and Power classification system.
Upon release, one of the main criticisms hounding Destiny 2 was its conversion of shaders from permanent unlocks to single-use consumable items . In response, many were quick to point out that shaders in general were easy to come by and that players wouldnāt actually be hurting for them all that much. In general, this is true. Shaders as an item are indeed relatively easy to come by. However, most of the best shaders are only gained through opening “Bright Engrams”, items which are loot boxes in all but name. Theyāre obtainable through in-game means but only at a snailās pace unless one decides to fork over some real cash. Players also have absolutely zero control over what they get out of them. So while those cool shaders are technically obtainable, thereās no guarantee that a player will ever get the one they want, much less more of it. So instead of encouraging players to enjoy Destiny 2ās new system that allows every piece of gear to be individually customized, the game instead pushes players to do the opposite and hoard what shaders they do get until they manage to obtain a piece of endgame gear that wonāt be immediately scrapped. Armor and weapon mods suffer from a similar drawback too, though they can at least be bought with in-game currency. This problem isnāt just limited to consumables either. Thanks to Destiny 2ās deplorable token system, thereās been wholesale reduction of player control over the gear they earn. The system is probably meant to promote grind, but instead it does the opposite. Why should the gameās players bother with the grind loop if they canāt grind for the things they actually want?
[Jason Harris]: Itās really an amazing narrative opportunity to strip away the powers. Itās the tried and true, “is Superman really Superman without his powers,” scenario. If given the opportunity, we would have loved to do more missions without players having their Light, but that is not the case. I looked at it as nothing more than a great story opportunity. [JH]: Like any good story, itās going to live or die based off the depth and reliability of your villain. We put a lot of hours into developing Ghaul. At first, yeah, he seems like a guy who just wants to kick us in the balls and move on down the road after taking Earth.
