Overwatch 2 is a strange game to review. It’s a free-to-play live-service experience that depends on a consistent audience to find games and progress through its battle pass. As you might have already guessed, there were only so many games journalists in the world to populate its servers as we rocketed towards the embargo. Thus I am left in a bit of a pickle.

There’s a few new options – most notably the presence of an in-game shop and battle pass. Loot boxes are gone for good, with premium currency and seasonal progression now used to earn skins and other cosmetics. Time will tell whether this model works, but Blizzard isn’t shy about putting it front and centre. Aside from that everything here is basically the same, and that includes graphical settings and other such options that I forgot to take screenshots of before being locked out of the review build. Trust me on this one.

A few in-menu gameplay shots had a section below the player’s information that was blurred out throughout the video. However, one screenshot circulating on the webs shows a shot of Junkrat’s Talents menu wherein the text in question is visible. It reads “CLAN

It was the biggest shooter in the world for a long time. Blizzard eagerly celebrated new player milestones on social media, while seasonal events became an all-encompassing occasion in the shooter space before the days of battle passes and live service updates. It was both ahead of its time and constrained by the formula it existed within, as additional game modes introduced as part of big updates and quarterly events never lived up to the base experience it was built upon. Junkenstein’s Revenge, Overwatch Archives, and Winter Wonderland were great fun, but fighting against bullet sponge AI wasn’t what this game was about, and hoping to expand on this universe only served to highlight its shortcomings.

The Overwatch 2 battle pass is clean and simple. I’m surprised Blizzard didn’t decide to push the boat out or try something new with its implementation of the mechanic, because what we have here is rather basic and predictable. Some tiers have more than one reward hidden away inside them which is cool, and the variety of cosmetics is quite incredible and makes great use of the extensive hero roster, but what you’re working towards is very clear.

The wait for Overwatch 2 has been characterized by many fans as excruciating. Due to a huge drought of content for what has felt like an eternity, it’s no wonder that the small morsels of information that Blizzard has provided are treated like nuggets of gold. I suppose it’s a testament to how much we loved these characters that fans were able to create detailed animated films of their main being drilled into oblivion. I respect that dedication, yet it also highlights how blatantly sexualised so much of the cast was, with many of their designs intentionally drawing in the male gaze with conventional body types and poses drawing our eyes to very specific parts of the body. Most of the girls were clearly designed by dudes. \
