Avowed’s Dragons Have One Leg-Up Over Skyrim’s

23 April 2026elliott24xBusiness, Sales

Skyrim ‘s dungeons are not poorly designed by any means, but it isn’t long into the game before they begin to get somewhat predictable. A large Nord tomb will almost always begin with winding underground crypts leading to a larger cave system, which in turn leads to a “puzzle” door which can only be opened with a Dragon Claw . Beyond the door is a final fight, a world wall, and a conveniently placed secret door which leads right back to the entra

The last Elder Scrolls game was all about dragons, but there are reasons that the dragons in Avowed could stand to be far more impressive and interesting than those that appeared in Skyrim . Here’s a breakdown of what makes Pillars of Eternity ‘s dragons special in the lore, and how this could make for more interesting roleplaying and combat encounters in Avow

Obsidian’s status recently underwent a pretty major change. Although it was once an independent studio, Microsoft acquired it in 2018 , right in the middle of the development of The Outer Worlds. Obsidian hasn’t lost any momentum thanks to this change of ownership, though; if anything, it seems like Obsidian is ramping up development. Fans of the studio have a lot to look forward to over the next couple years, between Avowed and Grounded. Based on how many projects Obsidian is stacking up, it’s also possible that it’s planning even more new games with the help of its new parent comp

Solstheim has some fantastic lessons to teach Avowed . The setting has a unique relationship with some of the key tenets of the Elder Scrolls formula, and is able to come to life even more convincingly that most of Skyrim ’s holds. Here’s what the Dragonborn DLC can teach Avowed , as Obsidian develops what some fantasy fans are hoping will be Skyrim ’s sort-of spiritual succes

It appears that significant progress has already been made developing Avowed ‘s dungeons. Fans can only hope that Obsidian chose to keep some of the unique dungeon design found in Pillars of Eternity . It may seem risky to move away from the Elder Scrolls formula , but those risks could be just what helps Avowed step out of Skyrim ‘s sha

The second smart thing about this intro is that it leaves the player character’s motivations entirely up to the player. The plot with the Platinum Chip is certainly intriguing, and some players may be driven to find out this here Benny and exact revenge. It’s also completely reasonable, however, for players to avoid the man who once shot them and left them for dead, count themselves lucky, and head out the opposite way through the Mojave Wasteland. In contrast the Bethesda RPGs Fallout 3 and 4 make it extremely hard to justify ignoring the main quest, particularly in Fallout 4 where the Lone Survivor believes their infant son has been kidnap

Avowed will see Obsidian Entertainment directly take on The Elder Scrolls ‘ spot in the RPG market. The upcoming first-person RPG will be set in the fantasy world of Eora first developed for Obsidian’s two Pillars of Eternity ga

Pillars of Eternity may not be a first-person RPG, but with their shared setting the game most closely predicts the tone of Avowed , and there are still some lessons the new RPG can learn. Pillars of Eternity has a rich lore, a fascinating cosmology, and an in-depth plot. However, its seriousness often left its world and companions coming across as cold and detached. The story can be serious and its stakes high, but Avowed needs companions who show warmth like Minsc, the hamster-loving warrior from Baldur’s Gate . Without that, Obsidian can’t expect players to be as invested in their follow

While Solstheim has a lot of lessons to teach Avowed ’s Living Lands , the unique success of the frontier island as an RPG setting suggests that Obsidian may already be on the right track with its choice of location. What remains to be seen is whether the studio exploits all the unique opportunities its frontier setting presents, or if lets some pass it

Obsidian fans should get excited about the state of the studio. It’s determined to push out a lot of new projects, and experimental ones like that. The Outer Worlds ‘ incredible claim that no NPC has to live for players to beat the game proves that Obsidian wants to try bold new things. Obsidian’s future isn’t just packed with new games; it’s packed with new ideas that’ll help Obsidian grow as a stu

While returning to the same mega-dungeon could risk feeling repetitive, it also creates a far greater sense of accomplishment. The Endless Paths of Od Nua feels like a nearly insurmountable challenge to conquer, a dungeon that is genuinely intimidating and keeps the player in suspense, wondering what mysteries the next level might ent

Obsidian has had a rocky history, sometimes needing to crowdfund its games to get their development started. Now it’s in a very different place with Microsoft’s help. Frankly, it’s great to see someone as influential in the game industry as Microsoft acknowledging what Obsidian is capable of and giving it a much greater level of stability to help develop its ga
