US authorities arrest relatives of late Iranian military commander who were living in Los Angeles

15 April 2026hershelcloseComputers, Hardware
In a dramatic development that has drawn international attention, US authorities have arrested close relatives of the late Iranian military commander Qassem Soleimani who were residing in Los Angeles. The arrests, carried out by federal immigration and law‑enforcement officials, mark another significant episode in the ongoing geopolitical tension between the United States and Iran.

According to official statements, the niece and grandniece of Soleimani were taken into custody after the US government revoked their legal status, alleging that they had engaged in activities incompatible with American immigration laws and national security interests. The case has sparked debate over immigration enforcement, national security, political symbolism, and the broader implications for Iranian families living in the United States.

Who Was Qassem Soleimani and Why His Name Still Matters

To understand the significance of the arrests, it is essential to revisit the legacy of Qassem Soleimani, one of the most influential and controversial military figures in modern Middle Eastern history.

Soleimani’s Role in Iran’s Military Strategy

Qassem Soleimani served as the commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps – Quds Force, a unit responsible for Iran’s extraterritorial military and intelligence operations. Over decades, he became a central architect of Iran’s regional strategy across Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, and beyond. From the US perspective, Soleimani was accused of orchestrating attacks that resulted in the deaths of American and allied forces.

For Iran and its supporters, he was seen as a heroic defender of national sovereignty.

The 2020 US Drone Strike

In January 2020, Soleimani was killed in a US drone strike near Baghdad International Airport, an operation ordered by then‑President Donald Trump. The assassination triggered massive protests in Iran, heightened fears of war, and permanently deepened hostility between Washington and Tehran. Since then, Soleimani’s name has continued to carry symbolic weight in both countries—making any action involving his family particularly sensitive and politically charged.

Who Was Arrested in Los Angeles?

Identity of the Detainees

US officials confirmed that those arrested were:

  • Hamideh Soleimani Afshar, identified as the niece of Qassem Soleimani
  • Her adult daughter, Soleimani’s grandniece

Both women had been living in Los Angeles, California, reportedly for several years.

Their Immigration Status

Authorities stated that the women had originally entered the US lawfully and later obtained lawful permanent resident (green card) status.

However, that status was revoked shortly before their arrests. US officials alleged that the revocation was carried out after a review of their activities and public conduct, which authorities claimed conflicted with the terms of their residency and US national security interests.

Why US Authorities Arrested Them

Allegations by the State Department

According to statements released by US government agencies, including the State Department:

  • The two women allegedly publicly praised the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which the US designates as a terrorist organization
  • They were accused of celebrating attacks on American military personnel
  • Officials claimed they promoted Iranian regime propaganda while living in the United States

These allegations formed the basis for revoking their residency and uk news24x7 initiating immigration enforcement proceedings.
